About

Pog's Garden

Our Story 1.png

Pog’s Garden is a tribute to the women who are the pillars of the Cha Family.  Pog in our native Hmong tongue means grandma.  Our story starts with Rhia (Dia) who immigrated to the United States in 1979 with her son, daughter-in-law and six grandchildren from Laos.

Cher, the daughter-in-law, is now the matriarch of the Cha Family and has become a pog to 20 grandchildren of her own.  She is the wisdom and green thumb.  Today, Cher's daughter-in-law, Tzee (“Z”) have four children, and one day will be a pog herself.  These women have grown up knowing gardening, farming, and working with their hands.  They are the heart and soul of the farm in spirit and physical presence.

In 2015, 28 acres located near Hudson, Colorado was purchased.  While visiting the land as part of the initial showing, Cher and Tzee fell in love with the layout.  The half mile long strip of property is about 400 feet wide, where the east portion of the land have a quaint 1920 vintage little house and out buildings.  The property gently slopes to the west and flattens to 18 acres of level ground.  With a breath taking view of the Rocky Mountains and Longs Peak in the distance, our journey begins.

Uncultivated, the land had served as grazing and haying pasture for horses and cows.  The first year was of learning and getting the home back into service after many years of vacancy and neglect.  The well water was turned on in the summer to the house.  The electric water heater was fixed.  The propane gas tank and two heaters in the home were refurbished to providing heat for the fall and winter.

In the spring of 2016 for the second year, 1,500 gladiolus bulbs were planted along with one row of zinnias.  The learning curve was tremendously steep and the weather was harsh.  Only passion was the thread that held everything together.  By midsummer the gladiolus and zinnias begin to bloom.  As the flowers bloomed, the quest to share with people begins.  Two farmers markets were attended and the flowers were a hit selling out every weekend.  Pog’s Garden continues to be at the farmers market on the weekend during the summer.

Today:

Pog’s Garden had expanded our cultivation to multiple acres.  We dedicate one acre to our specialty vegetables.  The rest of the acreage are being planted with flowers.  We have fresh cut flower plots and attraction flower plots.   Our attraction flowers focus on numerous colors and varieties of zinnias.

Future:

What tomorrow will bring is an adventure.  Our dream is to create 20 acres of flower farm to share with the people of Colorado and the world showcasing the love of gardening and farming by the women of the Cha Family.

Our Farming
Practices

Because of the dry Colorado climate, we utilized our irrigation water efficiently.  This is achieved by installing plastic mulch and drip tape irrigation.  The plastic mulch prevents evaporation, warms the soil during spring and summer to promote growth, and acts as a weed barrier.  The drip tape conserves by directly applying water to the plant roots.
